Can You Solve This? The Overlooked Dutch Invention That Shaped the Modern Globe
There are many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, though, that honor should go to the mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, constructing a modest merchant vessel required approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring over three months,” writes the author. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than seven days.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical cutter, which converted timber to boards using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could build ships more quickly compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and cultural dominance across Europe and the world.
The Original Genuine Industrial Device
The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, was “mankind’s initial true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. One component transformed the rotary motion to vertical action for the saw. Another component transformed the rotary motion into a sideway’s motion feeding the timber to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead a measured step per cycle.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to combine these parts so the machine acted in a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting on every downward stroke while moving on every return stroke. It was an astonishingly clever application of basic components.”

Construct a mechanism which converts rotary movement to up-and-down action. Your available these items exclusively: A spinning wheel. Two pegs. Two bars. A “guide”, that is a cylinder or housing into which a single the rods can slide snugly. (Assume it is possible to put things on a base, so the parts don’t collapse.)
